UNEP-Daimler Environmental Forum for Climate Justice

Felix declares each tree planted by Plant for the Planet to be a symbol for climate justice

Felix could not have wished for a better place on the list of speakers. Following the excellent speeches by Rajendra Pachauri, Mojib Latif, Otmar Edenhofer, Ashok Koshla and Achim Steiner at the 5th UNEP-Daimler-Environmental Forum in Magdeburg (Germany) on 3 July 2008.
At the 3rd Forum in November 2003, HRH Prince el Hassan bin Talal of Jordanien presented the Global Marshall Plan, which prompted the German magazine Der Spiegel to write an article titled Töpfer und Prinz Hassan fordern einen Global Marshall Plan (Töpfer and Prince Hassan call for a Global Marshall Plan).

In a way Felix summarized the speeches of the previous speakers by calling for Climate Justice.

Being an official UNEP representative for the children of this world, Felix declared each of the millions of trees planted by children worldwide to be a symbol for climate justice. Emission rights have to be distributed equally (per capita of the population) so that everyone has the same rights. Felix said: "The market will put a price on carbon".

Felix thanked Achim Steiner in the name of the children for everything he is doing for their future. They promised to collaborate more closely in the next two years.

In many more conversations did Felix have the opportunity to talk about the children's vision. He planted the seed for climate justice in the hearts of the listeners.

The Coalition for the Global Commons at the Civicus World Assembly

People, Participation, Power
The Coalition for the Global Commons at the Civicus World Assembly

From June 18-21 Civil Society Organizations from more than 100 countries got together in Glasgow, Scotland to further explore the overall theme of "Acting Together for A Just World". This theme was highlighted in 30 workshops, daily plenaries and several exchanges. The Global Marshall Plan Initiative hosted one of the workshops, a teach-in on the Coalition for the Global Commons. The four facilitators, Helge Bork, Peter Hesse, Todd Lorentz and Sumiko Tanaka discussed with the participants from all over the world the thematic issues laid out in the draft action plan of the Coalition for the Global Commons. Participants not only started to think about their work with a Global Commons perspective, they got interested in participating in the Coalition.

The second part of this workshop was the artistic expression of the committments for the Global Commons. Inspired by Ernesto Handl whose concept of "Tattoos" inspired us, the delegates made their statement on canvas. This powerful expression is currently on display in the Civicus members' lounge and attracting great interest. The tattoos project is meant to grow over time. Each round of consultation is encouraged to add their thoughts through artistic expression. Soon you'll be able to see it grow online.

Felix Finkbeiner elected to UNEP Junior Board

He is now one of the youngest elected UN representatives

Felix represented the students' initiative Plant for the Planet at the Tunza conference in Stanvager, Norway, which was organized by the UNEP (Unites Nations Environment Program).
On Friday, June 20, 2008 delegates from 105 countries elected Felix to join the Junior Bord of UNEP.

He is representing Europe (10-14 years) for the two year term and will be the legitimate voice for the world’s children. His programmatic speech on climate-justice, participation and the planting of trees may become the official agenda for the 2010 UNEP Children’s Conference on Environment, hosted in Korea. Children will not only plant trees but also call for climate-justice and demand genuine participation in shaping their future.

Plant for the Planet is part of the Coalition for the Global Commons.

Some Thoughts on The Ethical and Spiritual Dimensions That Humanity Needs to Adopt to Build A Better World

Essay by Zeki Ergas

It is increasingly recognized that unless man changes, the world will not change. That means that man’s conscience must change. And that, in turn, requires a fundamental change in the education of children. That education has to begin in the home, continue in kindergartens and nursery schools, and elementary schools. We must inculcate children new ethical and spiritual values that emphasize peace, social justice, solidarity, and frugality. In the long run, the survival of humanity and the planet may well depend on the success of that project. If we fail, humanity and the planet may suffer terrible consequences. The four big challenges that humanity must meet are: building a culture of peace; eradicating extreme poverty; ending nuclear proliferation; and dealing effectively with global warming.

Rembering the visionary Harlan Cleveland

Former supervisor of the Marshall Plan for European recovery died on 30 May 2008.

He was a journalist, an assistant secretary of state, a NATO ambassador, a university president and the author of a dozen books on leadership and public policy, and he was interested in almost everything - in part because he believed that everything is interrelated.
Many of his ideas are of importance for the Global Marshall Plan Initiative, especially his thoughts on Global Governance.
