In 2005 "Make Poverty History" reached 85% name recognition. That was a
tremendous success. However, the whole campaign was built around
"development aid". Apart from Nelson Mandela on 3 February 2005, no-one
after him broached the issue of structural poverty induced by the globalized
system (unjust trade system). Despite structural poverty being responsible
for about 90% of poverty, it is quite likely that in 2007 too, only the
symptoms will be talked about. In June 2005, Tony Blair seized the UK
campaign's demand to call for a 50 billion dollars debt relief. This leaving
the population with the impression that their government did a good job.
"Make Poverty History" was ended in early 2006.
Analysis of the campaign
Angela Merkel will make a just world order, a global social market economy
an
issue of the G8 summit in Heiligendamm as announced at the WEF in Davos. This
historic chance has to be seized. The planned campaign should broach the
issue of Global Governance when dealing with poverty. We will have to start
our own campaign on "world domestic politics" since development NGOs are
likely to concentrate on aid only in their communicationn. Within the next
eight months a historic window of opportunity opens up. We are accountable
for making use of this timeframe. On the website
www.togetherforequality.org we are collecting and discussing slogans
for this campaign.
A number of organizations and alliances is also preparing for the G8 summit.
Some of the activities have already been started and are presented here:
Attac is planning various activities such as an
alternative summit and demonstrations which are themed "
Keine Macht für G8!" (no power to G8).
GCAP (
Global Call to Action aganist Poverty) the woldwide
alliance, which the Global Marshall Plan Initiative supports, calls on
Chancellor Merkel to deliver results concerning
poverty reduction.
Together with its international partners, in Germany it is "
Deine Stimme
gegen Armut", GCAP demands to
"
Stand-Up Against Poverty" during the
Month of Mobilization (16 September - 17 October 2006).
The UN Millennium
Campaign Germany joined in and plans to
make an impact on 15 / 16 October at the worldwide Stand-Up event.
The
alliance
Gerechtigkeit jetzt! (Justice now!)
proclaimed a year of action which started in May 2006 and will end with the
G8 summit in June 2007. Its slogan ist "WTO – Weltweit Taube Ohren"
(Worldwide deaf ears).
Many of these organizations are represented in the
G8
NGO platform and together are planning
activities such as a series of events on globalization. The Global Marshall
Plan Initiative too is part of this platform.
