1. Steiermark supports the Initiative

The government of the federal state Steiermark carried a motion concerning the support of the Global Marshall Plan Initiative unanimously on Monday, 6 February 2006. Following Upper Austria and Salzburg, the Steiermark is the third Austrian federal state that actively supports the Global Marshall Plan for a Worldwide Eco-Social Market Economy. For further information please see a press release by the Eco-Social Forum Austria (pdf, 140 kB, in German)

2. Attac Austria criticizes the Global Marshall Plan

Attac Austria has published their position on the Global Marshall Plan on their website in February. The Global Marshall Plan Initiative welcomes this critical examination of the Initiative’s positions and is willing to enter into a discussion with Attac.
Please read the personal responses of our supporters Klaudius Gansczyk and Josef Riegler who have reacted already (in German).

3. The Initiative worldwide

a) Dubai
During his lecture at the special session of the UNEP "Governing Council" from February 7th till 9th, 2006 in Dubai His Royal Highness Prince El Hassan bin Talal presented the Global Marshall Plan as a possible solution for a world in balance."The Global Marshall Plan Initiative of 2004 provides a possible solution to rapid and unbalanced globalisation, and provides a workable alternative to growing social inequality and environmental degradation. If properly funded, this integrative approach could rapidly provide a broad and fast-growing network of stakeholders from politics, business and civil society." His complete speech can be found here (pdf, 40 kB)

b) Japan
While doing a six weeks research-internship at the Gio Peace Foundation in Japan, Anne Wenger took the opportunity to promote the Global Marshall Plan Initiative.

4. Meeting of the Initiative in Salzburg

The Global Marshall Plan Initiative held a very constructive meeting on the Initiative’s strategy in Salzburg on February 28th which was attended by 60 participants. The decision was made to concentrate our actions on influencing the process within the EU and the G8 with respect to Germany’s double-presidency in 2007.

Our Initiative is in contact with VENRO (Make Poverty History) and GCAP (Global Call to Action Against Poverty) regarding the preparation of a joint national or international campaign building up on the success of the Make-Poverty-History-campaign and Live Aid concerts that took place during the British dual-presidency in 2005. Many supporters are preparing remarkable, targeted activities (events, seminars, declarations, consultation processes etc.) for this purpose.

The Initiative is involved in the Global Call to Action Against Poverty and as an input for the GCAP March meeting sent these documents:
balance, quotes Angela Merkel

Our five-cornerstones-paper including the Initiative’s core demands was further refined and accepted by consensus at the Salzburg meeting. Other highlights in Salzburg included Dr. Franz Fischler’s report on the Initiative’s status in Brussels as well as Prof. Lorenz Jarass’ lecture on a worldwide reform of taxation legislation, Prof. Sergey Kapitza’s speech on population growth, and nearly two dozen more contributions from other participants. Special thanks to the Ecosocial Forum Austria for the generous hospitality and their invitation to Salzburg.

5. Global Marshall Plan inspires a new book

Inspired by the Initiative's book "Impulses for a World in Balance" that Prof. Dr. Christoph Stückelberger had received at the German Protestant Church Congress in May 2005, he wrote - in collaboration with Dr. Hella Hoppe – a new book with the title "Globalance - Christian Perspectives for a Human-Oriented Globalisation"; it is available in German and French. You can download the German version from our website as a PDF-document (380 kB, in German) or order the book online.

6. AIESEC series of lectures
