1. Austrian MPs to discuss Global Marshall Plan

More and more Austrian MPs demand a discussion of the Global Marshall Plan in Parliament. On 13 December 2005, in the Austrian Parliament's Commission for European Affairs, MP Wolfgang Pirklhuber (Green Party) called for a discussion about the Tobin Tax and the Global Marshall Plan on European level. These days, Franz Glaser, the ÖVP's ODA speaker (Österreichische Volkspartei - Austria's governing party) declared that sustainability has to determine the world's political agenda. In this context he calls the Global Marshall Plan a sensible basis. This is encouraging in the light of Austria's EU presidency.

2. "Hoffnung Europa" presented

Margot Wallström
When Margot Wallström, Vice President of the European Commission - responsible for communications - visited Berlin on 1 December 2005, she presented the Global Marshall Plan Initiative's latest publication, which came right out of the printing press: "Hoffnung Europa - die Strategie des Miteinander". At a press lunch organized by the representation of the European Commission in Berlin, 25 Berlin based journalists were introduced to the Global Marshall Plan Initiative, Europe's role within the Initiative's concept and the book's role of highlighting the unique model of Europe and its relevance for the globalized world. Most of the journalists showed a positive response to the issues. (Angelika Bail)

Johan Galtung
During his lecture at the Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium Hagen, Prof. Dr. Dr. Johan Galtung, who is considered the founder of peace studies, presented "Hoffnung Europa", to which he contributed an essay. 3. Global Marshall Plan books awarded

Two Global Marshall Plan books were selected to be on the list of the "top ten of future literature". Each year, the "Robert-Jungk-Bibliothek für Zukunftsfragen" (Robert-Jungk-Library for Questions of the Future) analyses about 200 books dealing with future issues. Out of these the ten most relevant are selected. The books "Impulse für eine Welt in Balance" and Peter Spiegel's report to the Global Marshall Plan Initiative "Faktor Mensch" were included into last year's list. Chosen were also a book by our supporter UN Special Rapporteur Jean Ziegler and one of the sociologist Ulrich Beck, who contributed to the Initiative's latest book "Hoffnung Europa".
