1. Chancellor Schüssel for Tobin tax

On 10 July, Austrian Chancellor Dr. Wolfgang Schüssel called for a tax on financial transactions for the first time. In an interview with the German newspaper "Bild am Sonntag" he spoke in favor of such a tax. See also the report in "Der Standard"(in German)

In a speech held on 6 July 2005 in the Austrian Parliament, Schüssel also stressed that he considers the Eco-Social Market Economy the best economic system ever invented by man. Read the speech in German.

2. World Youth Day

From 16 to 21 August hundreds of thousands of young people from all over the world will gather in Cologne, Germany following an invitation by the Pope. They will pray together, but also search for answers to the most pressing questions of today. Therefore the organizing committee has invited the Global Marshall Plan Initiative to introduce the concept of the Global Marshall Plan and hold discussions with the youth. The workshop will take place on Friday, 19 August from 16:15 to 18:00 in the Pfarrheim St. Sebastian, Sternenburgerstr. 27, Bonn. For further information on the workshop please contact Andea von Lehmden

3. Book project "A European Hope"

The Global Marshall Plan Initiative's campaign "A European Hope" is perceived very well and finds support. Many of the 200 people invited in mid July expressed their interest in the Global Marshall Plan Initiative and the campaign. Some 15 persons have already agreed to contribute to the book - among them Ulrich Beck, Susan George, Lord Anthony Giddens, Prof. Hartmut Grassl, Dominique Strauss-Khan and Prof. Brigitte Young.

We are still interested in your recommendations of more people, who should be invited to contribute to the campaign.

Your Support for the Book from September onwards

From mid September to mid/end November we are searching for professional volunteers who want to support the book project with translations (English-German/German-English), editorial office and composition - ideally directly within our project team in the coordination office in Hamburg. If you are a professional in this area and want to join the project team, please get in touch with Sabine Stoeck.
